  • Electronic Roundup: Emerging Technologies in Higher Education Anderson, Byron Higher Education Technological Advancement Technology Uses in Education Influence of Technology Technological Literacy Annual Reports Research Reports Electronics Library Automation Library Development The high rate of technological change that libraries are experiencing makes it seem that the future is closer than it used to be. Rather than having some notion of the future, particularly in emerging technologies, librarians need to be kept well informed and up-to-date in the potential uses of these technologies, especially those that apply to higher education. One source that thoroughly vets emerging technologies is the annual "The Horizon Report" (THR), a joint effort of The New Media Consortium (NMC). "THR" describes the results of the NMC's Horizon Project, a "research-oriented effort that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative expression with higher education." This paper presents an examination of the reports for the years 2005-2008. Each edition of "THR" describes six areas of emerging technologies that will impact higher education, and divides these areas into time frames that estimate the time to adoption--one year or less, two to three years, and four to five years.
