contents Illuminate Your Life with Art-History Lampshades Skophammer, Karen Art History Artists Art Activities Studio Art Painting (Visual Arts) Middle School Students This article describes an activity in which students created and designed lampshades using artists' styles. This was a unique experience because while all of the students have drawn or painted on flat canvas, none of them had done dimensional painting in this manner before. Essentially, they were planning and creating murals in 3-D. The author reminded her students to think of things such as balance, color, and uniformity when painting. The results were amazing! They displayed all the shades in the library with information about each artist's style portrayed. The students learned and remembered each other's artist's styles because they saw the lampshades being painted day after day. In addition, this activity was a good way for the students to hone their painting skills while "brushing up" on art history.
