Web Sites Electronic Publishing Libraries Social Networks Librarians Users (Information) Do libraries belong in the virtual world of social networking? With more than 100 million users, this environment is impossible to ignore. A rising philosophy for libraries, particularly in blog-land, involves the concept of being where the users are. Simply using new media to deliver an old message is not progress. Instead, librarians should repackage their library's content into a ready-to-share-with-friends format and concentrate on forging a new function or identity. In this article, the author describes how the Georgia Tech Library was reshaped into a hybrid social-academic destination and how an online social networking tool, such as MySpace, can be used to broadcast this new identity.
