Outreach Programs School Libraries Media Specialists Information Literacy Library Associations Professional Associations Standards Library Administration There is much buzz about the new American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards, and while many library media specialists are just trying to get their minds around the innovative Skills format and accompanying Dispositions, Responsibilities and Self-Assessment Strategies, the author takes a moment to direct one's attention to the use of Community Outreach to achieve AASL's new and exciting information literacy goals. First, the author reviews the four goals as outlined on page 3 of the printed standards. When one looks at these goals for connections with Community Outreach, one could immediately focus on "Goal #3, the sharing of knowledge ... ethically and productively as members of a democratic society." The author highlights the skills outlined by AASL as necessary for students to achieve this goal. She points out that community outreach can be a powerful tool for students in the development of the skills necessary to become not only life-long learners, but productive and ethical contributors in a democratic, knowledge-sharing society. |
