Many times the first word a young child learns is his or her name. Furthermore, names often serve as an indicator of a person's cultural identity. Unfortunately, for many English Language Learners (ELLs) and other students who immigrate to America, a name can be an embarrassment rather than a source of pride. When a student's name is mispronounced by teachers and peers it labels these students as different. Fortunately, there are numerous books for children and young adults that can help ELLs, and other immigrant students, see themselves represented in positive ways. This article presents a selective list of titles and activities that librarians can use to help all students appreciate similarities and differences in their names and their identities. These titles can serve as a starting point for conversations about the importance of cultural diversity. |
