The American Association of School Librarians encourages school librarians to generate opportunities for students' becoming "independent lifelong users and producers of ideas and information." In addition to promoting lifelong learning, "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs" defines multiple literacies and emphasizes the learning process. It challenges the school library media center to evolve from "a confined place to one with fluid boundaries that is layered by diverse needs and influenced by an interactive global community". Amid this evolution, school librarians expect their primary responsibilities to shift from teacher and information specialist to that of instructional partner. This article focuses on a school librarian's collaborative role, exploring its beneficial outcomes for teachers and students, as well as implementation barriers and possible solutions.
