The film spotlights the competition between pastry chefs--French pastry chefs--who come from all over France to compete. It's a microcosm of larger issues that people have in their life about being passionate about what they're doing and trying to do it on the best level possible and creating meaning in what one is doing. It's about much more than just making cream puffs. In this article, the author discusses how the same can be said of the craft of reference. Reference librarianship is more mindset than a set of tools and because of this, it can appear effortless. Both profession and inclination feed off each other so that the reference librarian's reading is extenuated by his profession, which in turn stimulates his further reading. With the passage of time a network of neural connections to all branches of knowledge takes hold of his psyche. The author also points out how a more emboldened technology could captivate succeeding generations and prove finesse in one's craft to be a thing of the past. (Contains 2 notes.) |
