- Service Increases Fueling Budget Growth Cottrell, Terry Library Personnel Academic Libraries Fear Library Services Budgets Economic Climate Motivation Library Administration Stakeholders Budgeting Retrenchment Librarians Reactionary stances against pending budget cuts should be considered to be less favorable positioning for library leaders versus more proactive and anticipatory strategies. By changing the attitudinal and service posturing of library staff and services, libraries can show themselves as a more essential function to their colleges. Budget cuts primarily evoke fear for any members of a unit faced with such harsh realities. Reductions and cuts be avoided altogether, however, through positive reliance on existing library staffs ability to implement organizational redesign in workflows and tasks. Workload increases can also evoke fear, but unlike the fear of budget cuts, workload increases can be much more under the strategic control of library staff. This article serves to demonstrate investigations into selective workload increases as a means of placing the library as a keystone to collegiate operations. In so doing, internal stakeholders will see a requirement to change motivation for service output, and external stakeholders will insightfully behold libraries in a more positive fiscal light.
