- The Organizational Role of Web Services Mitchell, Erik Libraries Internet Information Services Information Technology Librarians Web Sites The workload of Web librarians is already split between Web-related and other library tasks. But today's technological environment has created new implications for existing services and new demands for staff time. It is time to reconsider how libraries can best allocate resources to provide effective Web services. Delivering high-quality services on the Web in today's library means different things than it did even a few years ago--typically it means mobile friendly, on-demand access, interactivity, and usable design. As a result, libraries can easily find themselves providing homogenous and perhaps even lackluster services as compared to corporate information-professional counterparts. In this article, the author discusses the challenges in the modern library and how to address these challenges. A view of the evolution of Web services in libraries indicates, however, that libraries are currently in a trend of service normalization and efficiency seeking. By readjusting the focus of its Web services, an organization can begin concentrating on delivering locally relevant and unique services on top of core Web services.
