- ALA Candidates: Presidential Timbre Berry, John N., III Library Administration Presidents Library Associations Elections Advocacy Group Membership Recruitment Computer Mediated Communication Agenda Setting Change Strategies Organizational Change This article presents an interview with two effective spokespeople, notable school librarian Sara Kelly Johns and retired public library administrator Molly Raphael, who compete to be American Library Association (ALA) president. One of them will be elected president of ALA for a year's term beginning in July 2011. Each candidate comes from a well-defined ALA constituency--Raphael from the public libraries sector, Johns from the huge army of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Because each has ardent vocal supporters from these two powerful ALA camps, the campaign, especially online, is getting noisier. They differ in experience but agree on nearly all top issues, with only slight differences in emphasis. Both Sara Kelly Johns and Molly Raphael enjoyed discussing their plans and platforms as they work to become ALA president. At the end of each interview, each said the most important responsibility of the ALA president is to serve as a national spokesperson for libraries and the organization.
