  • Corner Office Interview: Gates Foundation's Deborah Jacobs Miller, Rebecca Access to Information Public Libraries Interviews Librarians Libraries Personal Narratives Library Services U.S. libraries gave the world a top talent when Deborah Jacobs left her transformational role as City Librarian of Seattle in 2008 to head the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Libraries program, the international sibling to the U.S. Libraries program. The initiative fosters national-scale projects with grantees in transitioning countries that have public library systems. The goal is to enable public access to information and communications technology--access that is not only sustainable but also, according to the foundation, "useful and used in ways that improve people's lives and spread the benefits." This article presents an interview with Deborah Jacobs. Jacobs discusses the similarities and differences between libraries in the United States and the ones with which she is working. She also relates how her foundation is approaching sustainability.
