contents Teaching Budget Cuts to Third Graders Weiss, Dale Class Size Grade 3 Budgeting Educational Finance Elementary School Students Elementary School Teachers Teaching Methods Boards of Education Letters (Correspondence) Writing (Composition) Childrens Literature Change Strategies As a teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) for the past 16 years, this author has grown used to dismal budget cut news arriving each February. Although cuts are always frustrating and their results burdensome, his school has been able to "hang on" reasonably well. This year, however, the budget cuts were extreme. The school's budget was down more than $150,000 and they were also slated to lose SAGE funding (class size reduction funding for grades K5-3). Besides markedly increased class sizes in the coming school year, the school would also be losing its art teacher, library media specialist, math teacher leader, six classroom teachers, and an educational assistant. In this article, the author shares how he uses the book "Martin's Big Words" to explain to his students that trying to change unfair things often takes a very long time. (Contains 1 resource.)
