Offering good, informative orientations can provide the direction needed to ensure that happens. Orientations should be part of every school library media specialist's job description and role. Orientations can be as long or short as the school library media specialist feels is necessary. They can be as complicated or simple as the school library media specialist feels is appropriate for patrons. Of course, the best time for orientation for all new students and new staff is at the very beginning of the school year. Students and teachers who have been at the school for a while still need a refresher as well as an introduction to any new services, resources, and programs that the school library media specialist will be offering. Orientations allow the media staff to meet all the students in the school, get to know their teachers on a more personal level, become familiar with the needs of their patrons, and prove their willingness and desire to work with all the patrons in their learning community. Although orientations can be time consuming and exhausting, the benefits well outweigh the effort the school library media specialist puts into them. This article discusses how to provide an orientation to make sure patrons are headed in the right direction. |
