But in this day and age, school librarians are realizing they must push the envelope to remain current and relevant. In most buildings they are the only professionals involved with the consumption and production of knowledge, the ultimate asset in a post-industrial economy. The traditional concerns for social justice and open access to information position librarians for school leadership roles in this digital age. In this changing information landscape, with an evolving range of digital tools and web-based applications promoting manufacture and manipulation of a variety of multimedia products, school librarians have an unprecedented opening to lead from somewhere other than the middle.
