contents The School Librarian as Teacher: What Kind of Teacher Are You? Hamilton, Buffy J. School Libraries Librarians Instructional Leadership Librarian Teacher Cooperation Library Role Teacher Role Partnerships in Education High Schools Library Services Instructional Development Teamwork Teacher Collaboration In this article, the author discusses the role of school librarians as teachers in our learning ecosystems. In the author's partnership as an embedded librarian with English teacher Susan Lester at Creekview High School, they have sought in their Media 21 learning initiative to engage student participation, creating and sustaining conversations for learning through inquiry, multiple media, and collaboration. The author's roles as program administrator, leader, instructional partner, and information specialist blur as they inform and shape her work as a teacher. The possibilities of the library as a learning space disrupt traditional precepts of the library as a data warehouse and instead establish the library as a site of participatory culture. She believes that a library that is a site of participatory culture is conducive to helping students create personal learning networks and environments that allow them to cultivate resources for accessing, evaluating, and sharing information locally and with the world at large. Through shared ownership of instructional design, content, and assessment strategies with Susan, they have been able to engage students in conversations for learning and greater participation.
