contents A World of Words and Wisdom: Exploring the Global Community of Libraries and Remarkable Librarians in Children's Literature Monroe, Suzanne S. Libraries Childrens Literature Picture Books Librarians Books Users (Information) Reading Library Materials Professionals in the field of children's literature have noted the influence of global stories and international perspectives on young readers (Freeman & Lehman, 2001). Books can dispel prejudice and build community through enthralling stories that help one imagine others' lives (Rochman, 1993). Indeed, books are one way to open doors and explore the world. The past two decades have seen significant changes in themes of trade books, including an increase in quantity and quality of children's literature about libraries and librarians. For the purposes of this article, a substantial number of picture books and chapter books were reviewed in the process of determining final recommendations for publications of high quality and thematic appropriateness. These books were selected due to their focus on personal, family, community, and global library experiences. Representation includes diverse protagonists as librarians and library patrons. These selections also provide strong messages about discrimination of marginalized populations with regard to access to books, as well as empowering images that have emerged with ensuing social change. Each of these publications promotes positive images of reading, within the context of the library experience. Seasoned library patrons may recognize themselves, as well as others, between the pages of these books. Hopefully, young readers will be encouraged to identify with empowered protagonists who enjoy stories, read and write books, and regularly visit the local library.
