| contents | Beyond Habit and Convention: Visual Literacy and the VRC Rybin, Amanda Visual Literacy Visual Aids Academic Libraries Special Libraries History Marketing Library Services Technological Advancement As one might expect, visual literacy has particular necessity for the librarian who, like this author, works in a Visual Resources Center (VRC). Recently the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) published its updated "Visual Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education." These standards succinctly introduce visual literacy as "a set of abilities that enables an individual to effectively find, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media" (ACRL, 2011). According to the author, this definition is aligned closely with their VRC's mission to help students and instructors find, create, and display images. There are several challenges to visual literacy on campus. When these challenges are not met, there is reliance on convention and old habits. This article discusses these challenges, which include: (1) resource unawareness; (2) discomfort with technology; and (3) information overload. The author concludes that it is important to recognize challenges to visual literacy to continue to transform ineffective habits and inspire new ones. The end result is a vision of learning that feels spontaneous and natural, an academic practice that is truly visually literate. |
