contents Building inclusive markets for refugee and host communities: a case study of the ILO-UNHCR Approach to Inclusive Market Systems (AIMS) in Jijiga, Ethiopia International Labour Organization. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This case study provides an overview of the ILO’s Approach to Inclusive Markets (AIMS) and explains how the approach was implemented in a pilot project working in the livestock sector in Jijiga, Ethiopia. AIMS is based on market systems development (or M4P) principles and adopts a push-pull framework to devise an effective intervention strategy that promotes the economic inclusion of forcibly displaced and hosting communities in selected value chains and sectors. As such, AIMS works to bridge the humanitarian-development nexus and facilitates sustainable solutions to economic inclusion. This document provides an easy-to-read introduction to AIMS and offers guiding principles and concrete examples for practitioners who are interested to learn more about market-based livelihoods for refugees and host communities.
