| contents | The Neodymium (Nd) isotopic signature (εNd) has been widely used as a proxy to reconstruct past ocean circulation. Recently it has been increasingly questioned which archives can be reliably used to extract authigenic εNd used for the reconstruction of past ocean circulation and under which environmental conditions bottom seawater εNd are altered and the original water mass signature is overprinted. This dataset contains rare earth element and yttrium (REY) concentrations of authigenic, carbonate, stable Mn and Fe, and detrital sedimentary phases from the abyssal Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, focusing on the distribution of REY in different sedimentary phases in oxic deep-sea sediments. Samples for the Atlantic were collected during cruise MSM96 in 2020 and for the Pacific during cruise SO268 in 2019 using multicorers. Authigenic phases were extracted through a 10s leaching procedure using 0.005 M hydroxylammonium hydrochloride, 1.5% acetic acid, and 0.03 M Na-EDTA buffered to pH 4 with NaOH solution (Huang et al., 2021). The carbonate fraction was leached with 40% acetic acid buffered to pH 4 using Na acetate. Stable Mn and Fe phases were extracted using a "strong" leach using 0.05 M hydroxylammonium hydrochloride, 15% acetic acid and 0.03 M Na-EDTA buffered to pH 4 with NaOH solution. The leftover detrital sediment fraction was processed using alkaline fusion. Samples were analyzed using a quadrupole ICP-MS Agilent Technologies 7500 Series (GEOMAR, Kiel). Europium data for the detrital fraction were corrected for Ba oxide interferences. The oxide yield was 0.08%. |
