| contents | During cruise MSM118 (June 18 – July 4, 2023), sub-bottom profiles were collected on the Scotian Shelf, northwest Atlantic, using the hull-mounted Atlas PARASOUND P70 echosounder on RV MARIA S. MERIAN. The system transmitted primary high-frequency (PHF, 18 kHz) and secondary low-frequency (SLF, 4 kHz) signals in a narrow beam, providing high-resolution imaging of sediment layers down to ~150 m penetration. Quasi-equidistant pulse sequences were applied in deep water, while single pulse transmission was used in shallow areas (<200 m) to maintain pulse resolution of 0.188 m. Beamforming was corrected for vessel motion, and data were stored in *.asd and *.ps3 formats, with PHF used for seafloor detection. PARASOUND data acquisition supported station selection for sediment sampling, targeting Holocene-age deposits. Detailed mapping focused on pockmarks in the LaHave Basin (MSM118-14) and Quaternary channels in the Misaine Bank area (MSM118-03, MSM118-19, MSM118-20), revealing post-glacial sediment sequences and acoustic indications of gas migration. |
