| contents | During the Polarstern cruise PS144 from August 2024 to October 2024 in the central Arctic Ocean dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of the snow and ice were measured by impedance measurements at 50 MHz during 10 ice stations. Measurements were performed using the Stevens Water Monitoring Systems Hydra Probe Sensor. The cylindrical measurement region of the sensor has a length of 5.7 cm and a diameter of 3 cm. Snow and surface scattering layer (SSL) were measured by inserting the probe tines of the device either vertically or horizontally (in a snowpit), details in the "Comment" column. Ice core samples were obtained with a 9 cm corer. Then a positioning device was used to drill four 3mm holes vertically into the ice core for the Hydra Probe Sensor's central waveguide and outer rods. At what depth the ice was sampled is contained in the "Depth" column, where 0 m is the ice surface. The unique core number relates these measurements to the cores contained in the density and temperature datasets. The dataset also contains temperature, salinity and density measurements (all independent of the device) of the sampled snow or ice cores. For all media, a response was recorded and a repeat measurement was performed right after. The sample type (snow or sea ice, the latter being further distinguished into ice and surface scattering layer (SSL)) is denoted in the "Sample Type" column of the dataset. All measurements were done within the vicinity of the footprint of the onboard microwave radiometers installed for the VAMPIRE project ( https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.990496) (that is, in about 25 m distance to the port bow of Polarstern), further defined in the "Site" column. For more information about these measurements the user is referred to Chapter 6.4 of the cruise report (https://doi.org/10.57738/BZPM_0794_2025). |
