| contents | A brief histological study of the developing juvenile rudiment in larvae of regular sea urchins. Tankovich, Alina Kalacheva, Nadezhda Zatcepilina, Diana Kalachev, Alexander Animals Larva Sea Urchins This paper describes histological changes during the development of juvenile rudiment in larvae of two regular sea urchins, Mesocentrotus nudus and Strongylocentrotus intermedius (Echinoidea: Camarodonta). The general pattern of juvenile rudiment development in both species matches that described in the literature for other species. Formation of the vestibular cavity is observed only in eight-armed plutei. This cavity is connected to the outer environment via a pore throughout the juvenile rudiment development. The first signs of tissue differentiation in the juvenile rudiment are observed after the complete development of the epineural folds and epineural space as traces of the developing nervous system. In the mature juvenile rudiment, i.e., the juvenile rudiment in the larvae that are ready to settle, the derivatives of the ectoderm and left hydrocoel develop faster than the derivatives of the left somatocoel. The mature juvenile rudiment in larvae of both species already has a well-developed ring and radial canals of the water-vascular system, fully differentiated primary podia along with primordia of secondary podia (derivatives of the left hydrocoel), circumoral and radial nerves, first spines, and a pharynx progenitor (derivatives of the ectoderm). The derivatives of the left somatocoel include primordia of teeth, pyramids, and primordium of the peripharyngeal coelom, with no signs of interpyramidal muscles. |
