Paul, Wawrzynkowski Ana, Sabatés Josep, Lloret The rapid expansion of Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs) in the Mediterranean Sea presents significant challenges for fisheries by potentially intersecting with key fishing grounds and affecting the biology of exploited species. This study introduces a trait-based vulnerability assessment tool to evaluate the impacts of planned OWFs on commercially important species in the Cape Creus/Gulf of Roses (NW Mediterranean, Spain). Our analysis examines the vulnerabilities of these species to OWF-related stressors, including sediment resuspension, habitat loss, electromagnetic fields, chemical pollution, light, noise, thermal radiation, entanglement, and oceanographic changes. Findings highlight that chemical pollution, habitat loss, and oceanographic changes are the primary stressors affecting exploited species. Although some species exhibit higher vulnerability scores, no significant differences in vulnerability were found among different fishing methods (trawling, purse seining, and small-scale fishing). This indicates that no single method is more susceptible to OWF-related stressors, emphasizing the need for a holistic fisheries management approach regarding OWF development in the Mediterranean. The proposed tool aims to support maritime spatial planning and provide guidance to policy makers and developers to ensure the sustainable coexistence of renewable energy and fisheries in the Mediterranean.
