A total of 200 samples from 118 sites were analyzed over three years. A clear decreasing gradient was found in both stock and sequestration rates from the East Sea toward the Yellow Sea, reflecting distinct regional environmental characteristics. The mean OC stock and sequestration rate were 6.45 Mg C ha and 0.368 Mg C ha yr, respectively, which are 30% and over two times higher than the global mean values, primarily attributed to the elevated sedimentation rates observed in this study. Notably, marine protected areas exhibited significantly higher values than non-protected areas, highlighting a beneficial effect of management. This study provides crucial national baseline data on marine blue carbon and suggests that strategic, policy-based seafloor management is an essential tool for climate change mitigation.
