Reflexiones a partir de un trabajo de investigación empírica Guillermo Cantor Filosofía Youth Insecurity Methodology Social sciences Empirical researching This paper aims to present some characteristics and advantages of combined and complementary use of both qualitative and qualitative approaches in social research. It is based on learnings and difficulties ecountered in the development of a research project on youth and insecurity, titled "Certainties threatened. A study on the reach of insecurity among youth". That work was basically a qualitative study. Its central goal was to examine the significate that different sources of security -such as work, education, family, the street, and certain social institutions- have to youth people. However, this analysis of subjective attributes (perceptions, attitudes, opinions, representations, assessments) was done taking into account certain structural data from local socioeconomic reality. That means that it was intended to enrich the qualitative analysis based on interviews with a quantitative analysis of public census and surveys. Such combination of approaches allowed a broad and integrated examination of the phenomenon studied, and permited us to explore some coincidencies and differences between isecurity?s structural-objective and subjective aspects.
