Samet Salud legal tobacco control industry Litigation There is now 50-years of experience in the United Stateslitigating against the tobacco industry. As the base of evidenceregarding health effects has evolved and new legalstrategies have emerged, successive waves of litigation haveoccurred. The many failures by the first and second waveswere followed by some notable successes in the third. Litigationby flight attendants and the states led to substantialsettlements and some beneficial consequences for tobaccocontrol. One of the most significant consequences of statelitigation was access to the industry´s documents, gainedthrough the Minnesota settlement. These documents furtherempowered the tobacco control movement and strengthenedthe basis for legal action.
