contents Tobacco control in China: the dilemma between economic development and health improvement Hong Wang Salud China tobacco control smoking consumer Although China´s National People´s Congress announcedits decision to ratify the WHO´s Framework Conventionon Tobacco Control (FCTC) on Sunday, August 28, 2005,fundamental challenges to tobacco control still exist. A surveyat the “No Smoking Day” on May 31, 2004 in Chinashowed that over 73% of respondents do not think thathuman society will be able to get rid of the consumption oftobacco products. Although the prevalence of smoking declined1.2% from 1996 to 2002, the absolute number ofsmokers increased by 30 million during this period. It isestimated that smoking prevalence will decline 10% in thenext 25 years. However, due to the population increase, thetotal number of tobacco consumers will be about the sameas today, which is 320 million. As long as the tobacco industrycontinues to be significant in overall economic development, and as long as the government continues to play asignificant role in tobacco production, the debate betweentobacco production and tobacco control will continue. AlthoughChina has already made significant efforts with regardto tobacco control, it is still in the beginning of its“long march” towards improving the population´s healthstatus by reducing tobacco consumption in China. 2006 artículo científico 0036-3634 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=10600316 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=106 Salud Pública de México application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública Salud Pública de México (México) Num.Su3 Vol.48
