contents The association between smoking and tuberculosis K. M. Hassmiller Salud Smoking tobacco tuberculosis Objective. To review epidemiological evidence on the associationbetween smoking and tuberculosis. Methods. Reviewedarticles were identified by searching Pubmed for theterms “smoking” or “tobacco” and “tuberculosis”. Additionalarticles were obtained from the bibliographies of identifiedpapers. Results. Thirty-four studies were reviewed: five investigatethe association between smoking and mortality fromtuberculosis, 13 investigate the association between smokingand development of tuberculosis, eigth investigate the associationbetween smoking and infection with Mycobacteriumtuberculosis, and nine estimate the impact of smoking on characteristicsof tuberculosis and disease outcomes. Conclusions.Taken together, evidence suggests that smoking (bothcurrent and former) is associated with: risk of being infectedwith Mycobacterium tuberculosis, risk of developing tuberculosis, development of more severe forms of tuberculosis, andrisk of dying of tuberculosis. In many cases, there is a strongdose-response relationship –both in terms of quantity andduration of smoking. These relationships are not explainedaway by controlling for potentially confounding variables suchas age, gender, alcohol consumption, and HIV status. 2006 artículo científico 0036-3634 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=10600323 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=106 Salud Pública de México application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública Salud Pública de México (México) Num.Su3 Vol.48
