| contents | View of Mexican family members on the autonomy of adolescents and adults with intellectual disability Betania Allen-Leigh Guillermina Rangel-Eudave Gregorio Katz Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce Salud Mexico autonomy empowerment intellectual disability qualitative research methods This study aims to describe the ways in which Mexicanadolescents and adults with intellectual disability exerciseautonomy. Two focus groups were carried out with familymembers who are the legal guardians of people with intellectualdisability who have received independent living trainingat the Center for Integral Training and Development (CADI,per its abbreviation in Spansh). Focus group transcripts wereanalyzed with codes defined a priori, based on an existingtheoretical framework on autonomy and quality of life amongintellectually disabled persons. Autonomy is exercised bythe intellectually disabled in the personal, social, sexual andeconomic spheres of life. Empowered autonomy implies thatthe person is taught the necessary skills and then allowedto act upon his or her own interests. Negotiated autonomyincludes guidance, explanation and negotiation; it constitutesa learning process. Interpreted autonomy is the most limitedtype described, and implies protection, interpretation and mayinvolve decision-making by others. These types of autonomyconstitute a complex phenomenon and the divisions betweenthem are indistinct. 2008 artículo científico 0036-3634 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=10608715 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=106 Salud Pública de México application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública Salud Pública de México (México) Num.2 Vol.50 |
