  • Lead exposure among young urban women James H. Godbold Jacqueline M. Moline Anne L. Golden Andrew C. Todd Gertrud S. Berkowitz Salud lead women United States minority groups urban population Objective. Blood lead levels have declined among everyage group in the United States, but urban minority residentsremain at disproportionate risk for elevated lead levels. Our objective was to measure lead burden in youngwomen of childbearing age in New York City. We also describesuccessful means of recruiting this population into acohort study. Material and methods. Healthy womenaged 18-25 attending a New York City health care centerin 1995-1998 were eligible for participation. Participantswere recruited by health care providers, the study coordinatorand the participants themselves. Venous blood sampleswere obtained for whole blood lead, ferritin andhematocrit measurements, and detailed questionnaires wereadministered. Results. 239 women have been recruited todate. The population is predominately minority: 62% African-American, 33% Hispanic and 5% Caucasian/Asian. Theaverage age of participants is 19.3 years. Recruitment ofparticipants into the study is predominantly (55%) through“word of mouth” from previously enrolled participants.Few participants learned of the study through their healthcare providers. The mean blood lead level among study participantsis 2.1 ± 1.7 mg/dl, which is consistent with the mostrecent United States national survey. Conclusions. Bloodlead levels are low in young, urban minority women of childbearingage in New York City. In this population, recruitmentefforts were substantially enhanced with the help ofenrolled participants and the health care community. 1999 artículo científico 0036-3634 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=10609403 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=106 Salud Pública de México application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública Salud Pública de México (México) Num.2 Vol.41
