It has been hypothesized that lead may bemobilized from skeletal stores during conditions of high boneturnover, such as during menopause. However, such mobilizationhas not been documented in prospective studies. Thisdiscussion is focussed on some of the methodological difficultiesto be anticipated in longitudinal studies of lead mobilizationspecific to menopause and the issues that need tobe taken into account when evaluating the results of suchstudies. To evaluate whether lead mobilization occurs duringmenopause, a prospective repeated measures design isneeded using X-ray fluorescence analysis of lead in boneand serial measurements of blood lead.
