Debate continuesover the existence, magnitude and significance of thesetrends, and how best to evaluate the hypothesis that in uteroand childhood exposures to estrogenic compounds maybe to blame. Epidemiologic methods for assessing the impactof hazardous substances on male reproductive healthhave been developed mainly in the area of occupational medicine,and this paper will review the currently recommendedmethods. These include questionnaires to determine reproductivehistory and sexual function; reproductive hormoneprofiles; and semen analyses such as sperm concentration,motility, and morphology. New research tools that showsignificant promise from the fields of clinical reproductivemedicine and reproductive toxicology are discussed as possibleadditions to epidemiologic studies, including assays ofsperm function and genetic integrity, and biomarkers of DNAdamage.
