It was developed in 1988,and is now widely used in the United States. This system wasupdated in April 2001. The most important modificationsare the following: a) elimination of the category satisfactorybut limited by, b) the reintegration of benign modificationsin the normal category, c) atypical squamous cells of undeterminedsignificance is now named atypical squamous cellsand subdivided into atypical squamous cells ofundetermined significance and cannot exclude high gradesquamous intraepithelial lesion; and d) endocervical adenocarcinomain situ which is now a separate entity. Low gradesquamous intraepithelial lesions and high grade squamous intraepithelialcells remain unchanged. Recommendations havebeen proposed concerning automated review and ancillarytesting.
