Studiesshow that the mortality effect is primarily due to reductionsin deaths due to acute gastroenteritis and measles butnot acute respiratory infections (ARI) and malaria. Whileimprovement of the vitamin A status enhances the survivalof older preschool children, it remains unclear whether itbenefits infants (i.e. <6 months). Vitamin A supplementationdoes not reduce the overall incidence and prevalenceof common childhood illness; however, it reduces the incidenceof more severe episodes of diarrhea. Also, vitamin Asupplementation either during and/or immediately after theillness does not improve its symptomatology.
