This paper characterizes the current stage oftraditional medicine in nine countries of Latin America andthe Caribbean. Material and methods. This qualitativestudy was conducted between March and December 1998.Data were collected on the components of traditionalhealth systems in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean,by means of a network of individuals and institutionsfrom different countries that acted as expertinformants from different specialty areas. Results. Findingsfrom the analysis of traditional medicine regulation arepresented in three groups: a) Countries with some developmentsin the area of legislation; b) Countries where legislationis underway; and, c) Countries with no legislationor incipient regulation. Conclusions. Several stages of traditionalmedical practice legislation are found in the region.This heterogeneity shows the complexity involved in regulatingthe practice of providers with low levels of formaltraining, with different therapeutic practices, and with customsthat are frequently difficult to include within the standardsof the official health system. These findings are importantfor designing and implementing healthcare policies to adequatetraditional medical practices to the needs of populationsthat commonly use them.
