To decribe spirometric function and adjustmentto foreign prediction equations in Mexican workers claimingwork related disability. Material and methods. Wereviewed 5771 spirometries done at the Mexican NationalInstitute of Respiratory Diseases performed with equipmentand methods proposed by the American Thoracic Society. With the spirometries we generated multiple regressionequations separated for men and women based on age andheight, compared to other in common use reported byKnudson and Hankinson in North America and by Quanjerin europeans. Results. 80% of the tests were reproduciblefor FVC and FEV1 according to ATS, wheras 10% were reproduciblefor neither. Mean FVC in men was 12% abovevalues reported by Quanjer, 22% above Knudson, 3% aboveHankinson and 6% above Rodriguez-Reynaga, whereas similarvalues for women were 18%, 10%, 0% and 1%. Excludingobese and those who had less than 2 acceptable maneuvers, the numbers increase by 1-2%. FEV1 was also abovepredicted. Conclusions. Most workers requesting disabilityare able to generate a reproducible spirometry. Howeverfor the same gender, age and height, workers had a FEV1 and a FVC above normal values reported by Knudson andQuanjer and are more similar to those reported by Hankinsonin Mexican-Americans. While a set of appropiate ref-erence values are obtained, regression equations obtainedfrom the studied group will generate less error in the evaluationof disability in mexican workers. The English versionof this paper is available at: http://www.insp.mx/salud/index.html 2001 artículo científico 0036-3634 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=10643208 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=106 Salud Pública de México application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública Salud Pública de México (México) Num.2 Vol.43 |
