contents Costos y calidad de la prueba de detección oportuna del cáncer cervicouterino en una clínica pública y en una organización no gubernamental Jesica Gómez Salud non Mexico cytodiagnosis costs analysis quality of care Objective. To compare the costs and quality of cervicalcancer screening between a non-governmental organization(NGO) and a Ministry of Health clinic. Material and methods.A quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional studywas conducted between April and July 1999, in two healthcareclinics in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. Cervical cancerscreening production processes were compared alongfour components: a) Pap smear collection; b) its transportationto the cytology center; c) analysis and interpretation;and d) notification of results. The framework developed byBruce was used for assessing the quality of care. The frameworkincludes users? perceptions on information receivedand waiting times, as well as providers? perceptions of spaceand equipment availability. Results. The unitary cost of theproduction process in the public clinic ($144 pesos orUS$15.5) was 26% higher than in the NGO ($ 114 pesosor US$ 12.3). Women attending NGO services reported ahigher satisfaction with the quality of care than those whoattended the public clinic. The waiting time prior to screeningand the time each woman has to wait to receive testresults were the main sources of insatisfaction. Conclusions.Analysis of costs and quality of care results suggestthat NGOs should be considered as an alternative in theprovision of cervical cancer screening.
