contents Meeting the Challenge: Prevention of Pneumococcal Disease with Conjugate Vaccines Irma Gabriela Echániz Avilés Fortino Solórzano Santos Salud Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the leading causes of bothinvasive and noninvasive diseases in the pediatric populationand continues to represent a significant public healthburden worldwide. The increasing incidence of antibioticresistantstrains of the pathogen has complicated treatmentand management of the various pneumococcal diseasemanifestations. Thus, the best management strategy may bethe prevention of pneumococcal diseases throughvaccination. Although several pneumococcal conjugatevaccines have been clinically studied in infants and children, only a 7-valent conjugate vaccine (PNCRM7; Prevnar®/Prevenar®) is currently approved for the prevention ofinvasive disease. Vaccination with PNCRM7 is safe andeffective in infants and young children. Routine vaccinationwith the conjugate vaccine could improve outcomes by safeguardingagainst the development of antibiotic-resistantstrains of S. pneumoniae, thus simplifying the managementof pneumococcal disease. Additionally, the overall costsassociated with the treatment of pneumococcal diseasescould be substantially reduced, particularly in developingcountries. The time has come for fully applying this newadvancement against S. pneumoniae, to benefit the childrenof the world.
