Delivery procedures were observedand a questionnaire to identify complications was applied15 days after childbirth. Data analysis consisted in comparisonof proportions with the chi-squared test. Results.Maternal and neonatal complications were identified in bothsystems; however, maternal complications were more frequentin hospital care, whereas neonatal complications weremore frequent in traditional delivery care. The total numberof complications was similar in the two systems. Conclusions. No difference was found in the quality of care betweenthe hospital and the traditional systems. Observedcomplications may be attributable to resources and practicesof each system.
