contents Conocimientos y actitudes de la pareja hacia la práctica de la planificación familiar en la Selva del Perú Doris de la Cruz Ana Langer Gustavo F González Bernardo Hernández Salud men Peru practice knowledge attitudes Objective. To assess the association of knowledge and attitudesabout family planning (FP) with its practice in couplesof the Peruvian jungle region. Material and Methods.A cross-sectional study was carried out in the jungle regionin Peru (Pucallpa and Tarapoto), among 600 couples. Maleswere ³15 years old and females between 15 and 49 yearsold, who had resided in the area for at least two years. Aquestionnaire was used to determine FP practices (definedas the use of modern contraceptive methods (MCM) for³12 months), as well as attitudes and knowledge regardingFP. Frequencies were compared using the chi-squared test.Logistic regression was used to assess the association betweendemographic variables and MCM knowledge as wellas MCM utilization. The association between sociodemographicvariables and attitudes toward MCM was assessedwith linear regression models. Results. Males with primaryeducation or with no formal education were twice as likelyto have no knowledge about MCM compared with maleswith professional education (OR:2.18, 95% CI: 1.05, 4.50).Females with a catholic partner were more likely to knowabout MCM than those whose partners did not practiceany religion (OR: 0.60, 95%CI: 0.37, 0.97). Partner’s lowereducation, older age of women, and rural background ofmales were all factors associated with a less favorable attitudetoward FP practices. Couples in which the man didnot know about contraceptive methods were more likely not to use MCM than couples where the man knew aboutMCM (OR: 1.57, 95% CI:1.07, 2.30). Couples where the manhad an intermediate level of acceptance towards FP weremore likely not to use MCM than those where the man hada high level of acceptance (OR:1.90, 95% CI :1.03, 3.48). Thestrength of association was higher when the man had a lowlevel of acceptance toward PF (OR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.10, 4.51).Conclusions. Knowledge of contraceptive methods andattitudes toward FP among men are associated with thepractice of FP by couples. Study findings show that maleacceptance of MCM and FP is a necessary, important, andinfluential factor in FP promotion and practice.
