contents Globalization in Tijuana maquiladoras: using historical antecedents and migration to test globalization models Kathryn Kopinak Demografía This paper looks at the historical backgroundof export led development on the BajaCalifornia peninsula to find that thetransregional economy which has emergedthere via maquiladora industrialization hasdiscernible historical antecedents, and alsocharacteristics unique to the current era. Thislatest form of export led development has beenresponsible for greater economic growth thanever before, and required the building of alabor force via migration. The migrantsemployed in this area’s maquiladoras are morenumerous, come greater distances than those inother maquiladora centers, and have causedvery rapid growth in Tijuana. They also tend toabsorb the social costs of industrial expansionin this area, in terms of lack of housing, environmental protection, and health care, making it difficult for them to invest in theirown human capital to make this area morecompetitive on a world scale. Globalizationhere supports the transformational modelbetter than the hyperglobalist or skepticalmodels.
