The underlying researchquestion is until what extent there is a uniqueborder region in socio-demographic terms or,by contrast, the internationalline is aneffective deterrent for spatial diffusion ofsocio-demographics. The paper uses 1990 and2000 US and Mexican Census for a largeborder region that covers totally or partiallynine Mexican and five US states. Data onpopulation distribution and density, agestructure and migration are presented bymunicipality/country. The paper concludesthat, with the exception ofmigration (evenhere with a cautious note), census do notprovide evidence of a unified border region indemographic terms. Rather striking,differences persist in terms ofpopulationdistribution and growth, and age profile onboth sides ofthe border.
