Un enfoque semántico y pragmático Lourdes Molero de Cabeza Sociología semantics pragmatics personalism authoritarianism discourse analysis This paper presents an analysis of thediscourse of the current president of Venezuela,Hugo Chavez during the 1998 electoralcampaign and the first year of his government.Discourse is analyzed from the dual-perspectivepragmatic/semantic focus. In the semanticcomponent, the characteristics of the leader areconfigured in the form of political and socialknowledge, presented in a narration constructedfrom the personal point of view (first person) ofthe speaker according to the persuasive finality ofthe political discourse. Here, Chavez’authoritarianism is visible and characterizedboth as a leader of military origin who emergeson the Venezuelan political scenario during amilitary coup, and also due to his own discoursestyle.
