contents El Niño e sua influência no período de inverno de 1997 em algumas regioes do Brasil Francisco de Assis Diniz Multidisciplinarias (Ciencias Sociales) El Niño is the specific phenomenon of the heating of the waters that occurs in the Tropics of the Pacific Ocean as a result of the ocean-atmosphere interaction that causes periodic climatic fluctuations at the seasonal and interannual scales. This study shows that the current El Niño is reaching a great intensity in a short period of time. It has an influence in the reduction of the pluviometric regime in the north and center of the North Area; reduction of precipitation on the coast, east of the Northeast Area between the States of Rio Grande del Norte and Bahía during the rainiest period over the area; and the hot and humid winter that occurs in the South and Southeast Brazil, reaching high temperatures in up to 3 degree Centigrade above normal in some places. Temporal and spatial distributions were applied to total precipitation and they were compared to normal for the 1961 to 1990 period for the North part and East part of the Northeast coast and the difference of the precipitation reduction in percentage was presented. In the South and Southeast part of the country the difference between monthly averages of the temperatures and the normal climatic ones was made. An important increase of the temperature with respect to the normality was determined, which turned out that the winter was extremely hot with a high rate of precipitation in the Rio Grande do Sul State. During the first week of the winter high temperatures were observed in the two study areas. Therefore, a forecast of the present climatic and seasonal conditions of El Niño for the study area was developed. 1998 artículo científico 0303-7495 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=12627339 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=126 Bulletin de l'Institut français d'études andines application/pdf Instituto Francés de Estudios Andinos Bulletin de l'Institut français d'études andines (Perú) Num.3 Vol.27
