contents On the association between hydrometeorological conditions in Amazonia and the extremes of the southern oscillation José Marengo Carlos Nobre Gilvan Sampaio Multidisciplinarias (Ciencias Sociales) Northern and central Amazonia show tendencies for negative rainfall anomalies during the summer season on the mature phase of the strong El Niño events, such as 1982/83, 1986/87, and the current 1997/98. However, there is also a tendency for positive rainfall anomalies during some El Niño years, such as 1972/73. Broadly inverse variations of rainfall are evident in Northern and Southern Amazonia. It has been observed that some stations in Amazonia show abundant rainfall on the year before the peak of El Niño, while others show large negative departures on the beginning of summer while large positive rainfall anomalies during the fall season, of the El Niño year. In addition, strong El Niño events have also been linked to events of smoke clouds, consequence of the biomass burning during an anomalously long dry season, affecting the population of the main cities in Amazonia. 1998 artículo científico 0303-7495 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=12627341 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=126 Bulletin de l'Institut français d'études andines application/pdf Instituto Francés de Estudios Andinos Bulletin de l'Institut français d'études andines (Perú) Num.3 Vol.27
