| contents | Secuencia arqueológica en montículos del valle del Upano en la Amazonía ecuatoriana Stéphen Rostain Multidisciplinarias (Ciencias Sociales) Numerous sites with mounds are found in the Upano Valley, Morona-Santiago Province, in the Ecuadorian Amazonia. Archaeological research was carried out in this area, as part of scientific cooperation between France and Ecuador, managed by the French Institute for Andean Studies (IFEA). The study focuses on the mapping of archaeological sites, the analysis of the mound distribution, and the definition of pre-Columbian cultures. Excavations by scraping were made in a group of mounds and plazas of the Huapula site (Complex XI). This work provided new data about the building of the mounds, the cultural chronology, and the inhabitants. Between 700 BC and 400 AD, Upano communities lived in the Complex XI and built mounds. They left after the eruption of the Sangay volcano, which covered the country with a thick ashes level. Later, between 700 and 1200 AD, Huapula groups inhabited the mounds.
