- A Portrait of Success: The Rise of the Cayman Island an an Offshore Financial Center Marc Montgomery Estudios Culturales Caribbean economy and finance offshore financial Centers (OFC) history and traditions of the Cayman Islands During the last 30 years, while much of the Caribbean has experiencedincreasing economic hardships, the Cayman Islands have continued toprosper. In 1998 United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Preventionacknowledged the Caymans as the fifth largest financial centerin the word. This paper examines some of the factors that have contributedto the CaymanÕs rise as an offshore financial center (OFC) andexplores the history of CaymanÕs relations with the United Sates. Theanalysis will show that the Cayman Islands have a unique history thathas facilitated their emergence as the CaribbeanÕs premiere OFC.
