It considers academic, institutional, individual and socioeconomic desertion factors established by the Ministry of National Education (MEN) in Colombia. Although certain research studies regarding academic desertion causes have been carried out in national and international higher education institutions such as: University of San Carlos de Guatemala, University of Castilla-la Mancha, Politécnica University of Madrid, EAFIT University, Antioquia University, Tolima University, San Buenaventura University, and the Fundación Universitaria Los Libertadores University; This study is of great importance because it provides knowledge with regards to the academic desertion causes and proposals to mitigate the dropout. It outlines perceptions from former students and the guidelines proposed by the MEN overcoming partial views of the phenomenon of desertion and the development of this research will enable the strengthening of student retention strategies and graduates timely graduation from the institution. The methodology implies a single case study of quantitative nature and descriptive scope, and a data collection instrument employed was use of questionnaires answered by retired students to validate the causes of the desertion. The analysis of the results aimed at making recommendations to the faculties of the University regarding the variables drawn in the problem in order to ensure timely graduation. The results show that the variables of desertion differ by faculty and with a general trend towards varied socioeconomic issues.
