contents ¿Pueden aprender los hijos de los pobres en las escuelas de América Latina? Fernando Reimers Educación poverty compensatory policy education and society Educational inequality positive discnmination This paper reviews the links between education, poverty and inequality in Latin America. Theauthor reviews the study of these relationships from severa/ theoretical frameworks and arguesthat given the significant expansion in access to education in Latin America, and given the highlevels of income inequality it is necessary to examine the extent to which the education systemreproduces social inequality and to what extent in allows social mobility and changes in thesocial structure. The author presents empirical evidence on the education profiles of differentincome and ethnic groups in Latin America. He also reviews the differences by income group ineducation access, repetition rates and completion rates. In discussing this evidence the authoranswers three questions: why do some students never enroll in school? Why do some learnmore than others and why do some drop out before completing primary school? The answers tothese questions are integrated in four dimensions: poverty itself, insufficient access to preschool, inequality in educational quality 2000 artículo científico 1405-6666 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=14000902 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=140 Revista Mexicana de Investigación Educativa application/pdf Consejo Mexicano de Investigación Educativa, A.C.
