Una mirada desde España Antonio Viñao Educación educational XXth century historical research History of education academic disciplines The history of education is both a discipline in itself or the subjectof a number academic disciplines as well as a field of research. Inthis paper we analyse its development through the 20th centuryfrom its origins to its establishment as an academic discipline forthe training of university staff and teachers in a number of differentcountries under the influence of German historiography. We thendiscuss new departures in historiographical analysis that developedfrom the 1960ís and the origins of what has been called the ìsocialhistory of educationî approach. We also deal with the apparentlycontradiction between its growing institutionalisation as a field ofresearch and the beginning of its decline as an academic subject.
